Curator’s Notes

A substantial 50cl glass created for Passchendaele, a top-fermented Belgian blond developed by Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck in collaboration with the municipality of Zonnebeke for the First World War centenary commemorations.

The commemorative purpose dominates the design. Silhouetted soldiers cross the front beneath the Passchendaele name, while a single red poppy provides the only strong colour. The imagery refers directly to the Battle of Passchendaele of 1917 and the enormous human cost of fighting around the village.

Manufactured in 2013 — the year the beer itself was developed — this may represent an early example of the Passchendaele glassware produced for the centenary period. Its tall, gently waisted 50cl form is strikingly reminiscent of a British pint glass, an interesting visual association for a beer whose identity is so closely connected with remembrance of the First World War.
