Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck is an independent, sixth-generation family brewery with roots in Werken, West Flanders, where Amandus Vanhonsebrouck began brewing in 1811. His son Émile later opened Brouwerij Sint-Jozef in Ingelmunster, establishing the family’s long association with the town.
Under Luc Vanhonsebrouck, the brewery developed a distinctive portfolio spanning traditional Belgian beer styles and new interpretations. The sour Flemish brown “Bacchus”, the lambic-inspired “St-Louis” range and the strong blonde “Brigand” each reflect different aspects of Belgian brewing heritage. In 1986 the family acquired Ingelmunster Castle, inspiring the creation of “Kasteel Donker” in 1989 and the development of the Kasteel range that became the brewery’s best-known brand.
In 2016 production moved to the striking new “Bierkasteel” brewery in nearby Emelgem (Izegem).

Curator's Note
In more recent years, Vanhonsebrouck has continued to evolve its identity. The launch of “Filou” in 2014 introduced a more contemporary, character-led brand alongside its established beers, while newer Kasteel developments, including tropical fruit beers and cocktail-style serving concepts, demonstrate a willingness to experiment with how Belgian beer is presented to new audiences.
Today, Vanhonsebrouck represents an interesting balance between continuity and adaptation: preserving traditional Belgian beer identities while exploring new styles, flavours and ways of enjoying beer.
