Curator’s Notes

An elegant 33 cl goblet with a gently tapering bowl, long slender stem and broad foot. Manufactured in 2026, its decoration is unusually restrained: black Goliath lettering dominates the front, accompanied by smaller details including the Roman numerals MCLXI — 1161 — and a pair of crossed implements.

The Goliath name has a much stronger local connection than the simple branding might suggest. The beer takes its identity from the Ducasse d'Ath, the city's historic folkloric procession and its celebrated wicker giants. Goliath is the central giant of the procession, inspired by the biblical story of David and Goliath. The brewery's original Gouyasse beer takes its name from the local dialect word for Goliath, while Goliath Blonde carries the same tradition beyond the Ath region.

The meaning of some of the glass's smaller details — particularly the date 1161 and the crossed symbols — remains tantalisingly unclear.
