Curator’s Notes

This apparently simple 25 cl café tumbler preserves an earlier chapter in the history of Brouwerij Haacht. Finished with a gold rim and carrying little decoration beyond its red, white and silver branding, it was made for Super 8 Pils — long before that name was revived for the brewery's modern Super 8 range.

The glass belongs to the period before the brewery's pils became Primus. Its branding also retains the older spelling “Haecht”, rather than the modern Haacht, making an otherwise conventional piece of Belgian café glassware a useful record of the brewery's changing identity.

The precise age of the glass has proved difficult to establish. Its design and branding suggest the 1960s or 1970s, but the Museum has so far found no evidence allowing it to be dated more confidently. What we can be certain of is that Haacht replaced the Super 8 Pils with Primus Pils in 1975, so the glass is certainly older than that.

Purchased for just 50 cents, it is a reminder that an interesting museum object need not be elaborate, unusual or expensive. Sometimes the lettering on an ordinary glass is enough to open a surprisingly deep rabbit hole.
