Curator’s Notes

This is Brouwerij Haacht's limited-edition Super 8 Flandrien glass, created in collaboration with the celebrated Belgian road cyclist Philippe Gilbert. The brewery calls the design ‘The Cobblestone’, a reference to the cobbled roads that are such a distinctive feature of Belgian cycle racing.

The glass is an homage to Belgian cycling, with a colourful illustrated design wrapping around the bowl. Cobblestones, bicycles and other cycling motifs draw on the colours of the Super 8 brand and reward looking at the glass from more than one angle.

The choice of a Weizen-style shape is unusual for a Belgian Blond, but its tall, waisted form provides an effective canvas for the wrap-around artwork.

I acquired the glass from a friend, who gave me a four-pack Super 8 promotional gift set containing the glass.
