Curator’s Notes

Piraat comes from Brouwerij Van Steenberge, also responsible for the rather more flamboyant Gulden Draak. By comparison, this 33 cl tulip shows a surprising degree of restraint — although restraint is perhaps a relative concept when your beer is called Piraat and there is a sailing ship emblazoned across the bowl.

The glass has the familiar rounded body and gently flared rim of a tulip, finished with a gold band around the lip. The branding is concentrated on the front: Piraat in large red lettering beneath a black sailing ship, with the remainder of the clear glass left undecorated.

Piraat was created by Jozef Van Steenberge in 1988, following the success of Gulden Draak and using the same distinctive wine yeast. I can find no particular historical pirate or maritime tale behind the name. Instead, the brewery appears simply to have embraced the possibilities offered by Piraat: the ship, the language of journeys and, today, an invitation to “set sail”. The pirate story is therefore less ancient folklore than carefully constructed brand theatre.
