Esen

Region: Flanders

About this Place

Esen is a small village in West Flanders, now part of the municipality of Diksmuide. Predominantly residential and agricultural, it is the sort of quiet Flemish settlement that most travellers would otherwise pass through on their way to somewhere else.

For beer enthusiasts, however, Esen has one considerable reason to stop: De Dolle Brouwers. The brewery occupies the former Costenoble brewery and has turned an otherwise unassuming village into a destination for Belgian beer enthusiasts from considerably further afield.

Visitor notes

Esen itself requires little time to explore, so a visit is best combined with nearby Diksmuide or other destinations in the Westhoek. De Dolle Brouwers is very much the main attraction — and sufficiently unusual to justify the detour in its own right.
