Manufactured 2023 Curator’s Notes This Satan glass was bought from a specialist beer retailer in Brugge.
The 33cl goblet has clear echoes of an elegant wine glass. Its bowl narrows neatly into a long stem, which in turn flows into a broad, substantial foot.
The dominant feature is the vividly illustrated figure of Satan, staring rather proprietorially at a large glass of beer. The motif is carefully drawn rather than cartoonishly crude, with a narrow black, yellow and red border picking up the colours of the Belgian flag. Beneath it, the Satan name is rendered in deep red with orange highlights that give the lettering an almost flame-like appearance.
De Block produces Satan Gold, Red and Black, all strong top-fermented beers currently listed at 8% ABV. The brewery leans wholeheartedly into the infernal branding, but the Museum has not found a reliable explanation for why the Satan name was originally chosen. Unlike Duvel, whose name has a well-documented anecdotal origin, this particular devil is still keeping his secret.
De Block continues to lean enthusiastically into the Satan identity, including Halloween-themed promotion, so the infernal imagery on the glass is very much part of an established and deliberately theatrical brand.
