Curator’s Notes

This is anything but an understated Boon glass. Designed for the brewery’s newer Duivelsbier range, it uses a rounded tulip form with a short stem and broad foot, giving it the familiar proportions of a strong Belgian ale glass.

The branding is deliberately theatrical. The central Duivelsbier name sits over a flame motif, while four separate devil-like figures are scattered around the bowl, each apparently enjoying one of the beers from the range. The design clearly leans into the Flemish word duivel — devil — and there are obvious echoes of the much older Duvel tradition of using diabolical imagery around strong blond beer.

The print quality is particularly good, with dense red, black and grey decoration that feels almost enamelled. A nucleation mark sits in the base of the bowl.

What makes the glass especially interesting is Boon’s insistence on using it specifically for the modern Duivelsbier range of blond, brown and “wild” beers. A member of staff told me that these beers are only served in this glass at the brewery.

Duivelsbier itself is far from new. The name dates back to 1883, and Boon had already assisted with its production before taking over the historic Halle brand in 2003. Since 2023 the brewery has invested in developing Duivelsbier for a wider audience and expanded it into a range of different styles. The glass therefore represents something quite deliberate: one of Belgium’s great lambic breweries using an old local beer tradition as the basis for a distinctly modern, non-lambic part of its business.
