Curator’s Notes

This Blanche de Bruges tankard is an interesting example of how Belgian beer glasses often follow brewery tradition rather than strict expectations of beer style.

The glass carries the branding of Blanche de Bruges, a wheat beer brewed by Brouwerij De Halve Maan in Brugge. Also known as Brugs Tarwebier, the beer forms part of the revival of traditional Belgian wheat beers that had declined in popularity as lager became increasingly dominant. Blanche de Bruges retains a distinctive identity within that tradition, using raw unmalted wheat and Belgian hops as part of its character.

The heavy construction, faceted lower body and substantial handle give this glass a practical, sturdy character. The enamelled logo and embossed 25 cl mark suggest an earlier generation of brewery glass, although its exact date remains uncertain.

A tankard is not the shape many visitors would immediately associate with witbier, which is more commonly served in a tall Weizen glass. However, Belgian breweries have long created their own serving traditions, and this glass reflects the identity of a Brugge brewery and its beer rather than a universal rule about how wheat beer should be presented.

The current Blanche de Bruges glasses retain the same distinctive tankard form, but are produced with updated branding and in different sizes. The brewery currently offers versions including 30 cl, 40 cl and 50 cl glasses, making this smaller 25 cl example a glimpse of an earlier version of the same serving tradition rather than a completely different design.
