Explainers Curator’s Notes A substantial St-Feuillien goblet with a large rounded bowl and a surprisingly decorative stem. The stem is formed from a series of changing shapes rather than a simple continuous piece of glass, giving an otherwise traditional abbey-beer goblet a little more character.
The branding dominates the bowl, with the St-Feuillien name in large red Gothic lettering across a dark vertical panel carrying the brewery crest and the words Bière d'abbaye and Abdijbier. There are no other markings on the glass.
This example has clearly seen some use. Small areas of the printed decoration have begun to wear away and there is a slight imperfection in the rim, probably dating from manufacture. Neither particularly detracts from the glass; for the €0.50 I paid for it at a brocante, I am certainly not complaining.
I acquired this glass before a later visit to Le Rœulx, home of St-Feuillien. My attempt to visit the brewery shop proved unsuccessful — it was closed — but I subsequently found two other St-Feuillien glasses, allowing the collection to show several different interpretations of the brewery's glassware.
