Curator’s Notes

An older-style Petrus ale glass with a tall, gently tapering bowl, short stem and simple circular foot. There are no capacity, date or manufacturer markings, leaving the colourful decoration on the front as the glass's only identification.

That decoration is the interesting part. The cheerful bearded figure carrying an impressively large glass of beer is Petrus — Saint Peter — an older mascot of the brand. The character subsequently disappeared from Petrus branding before being revived in a more recent redesign, which deliberately drew upon the beer's earlier visual identity. Quatre Mains package design The connection survives in the modern brand through its Clavis ad Caelum, or “key to heaven”, theme: Saint Peter as keeper of the keys to heaven.

The print remains remarkably colourful and sharp, particularly the reds and yellows of Petrus himself. Against an otherwise completely undecorated glass, he has the stage entirely to himself.
