Manufactured 2015 Curator’s Notes At first glance, this appears to be a simple stemmed goblet, but closer inspection reveals a playful piece of branding. The elegant, tapered stem leads to a rounded bowl carrying the distinctive Wieze logo, with its red banner and colourful waiter presenting a foaming beer. The illustration cleverly uses the beer itself as part of the character, giving the design a small piece of visual theatre.
There is considerably more history behind that waiter than the modern appearance suggests. Wieze was once principally associated with the Van Roy brewery in Wieze and its enormously successful Pils. After the original brewery disappeared, the Wieze name and its familiar waiter were eventually revived. The modern Wieze Tripel appeared in the 2010s: a new beer carrying an old local identity rather than a straightforward continuation of the former Wieze Pils.
I discovered this glass at a Brussels brocante for just a few euros, attracted by its elegant stem and playful logo before knowing anything about the complicated history behind either the Wieze name or the beer it represented.
