Curator’s Notes

This classic La Chouffe tulip is dominated by Marcel, the red-capped gnome who has represented the beer since 1983. Created for the young brewery as part of La Chouffe's original identity, Marcel draws on the folkloric associations of the Belgian Ardennes and has since developed into a character in his own right.

The glass itself uses the familiar La Chouffe form: a generously rounded tulip bowl narrowing towards the middle before flaring noticeably at the rim, supported by a short stem and broad foot. The decoration is comparatively restrained, leaving Marcel to do most of the work.

I bought this glass before I considered myself a collector. It followed my first encounter with La Chouffe during a visit to the Ardennes in the summer of 2023 — an episode recounted in the Journey How I became a glass collector. In retrospect, this was one of the glasses with which the collection quietly began.
