Brasserie d'Achouffe
About this Brewery
Brasserie d’Achouffe was founded in 1982 by brothers-in-law Pierre Gobron and Chris Bauweraerts in the tiny Ardennes hamlet of Achouffe. Their first experimental batch, brewed in a garage, amounted to just 49 litres. La Chouffe—a strong, unfiltered blonde ale—quickly became one of Belgium’s most recognisable beers, thanks in part to Marcel the gnome, the character who has appeared on its labels and glasses since the early days. The range later grew to include the dark Mc Chouffe and seasonal N’Ice Chouffe. In September 2006 the brewery was acquired by Duvel Moortgat; it remains a working brewery at Achouffe and retains its distinctive local identity within the group.
