About this Brewery
Duvel Moortgat is an independent fourth-generation family brewing group, founded in Breendonk in 1871 by Jan-Leonard Moortgat and Maria De Block as a small farm brewery. Its defining beer began in 1918 as Victory Ale, inspired by British ales, and became Duvel in 1923.
The business has grown into an international specialist-beer group while remaining under family control. In Belgium it brews Duvel, Vedett and the Maredsous abbey beers, brewed under licence. It also owns Brasserie d’Achouffe, Brouwerij Liefmans and Antwerp City Brewery De Koninck. Bolleke and Tripel d’Anvers are De Koninck beers, rather than separate Duvel Moortgat brands.
The group now owns breweries in Belgium, Europe, the United States and China.
