Waterloo

Wallonia

About this Place

Waterloo is a town in Walloon Brabant, Wallonia, best known for the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. While the battlefield itself lies largely within the neighbouring municipality of Braine-l'Alleud, Waterloo has become synonymous with one of Europe's most famous military encounters.

For the Museum, Waterloo is associated with Brasserie de Waterloo, whose beers and distinctive glassware draw inspiration from the town's history while adding a modern brewing story to a place already known around the world.

Visitor notes

Let's be honest: if you're visiting Waterloo, it's probably because of the battlefield rather than the beer. The Lion's Mound, visitor centre and surrounding landscape comfortably justify the journey on their own.

The good news is that Belgian beer fits naturally into the day. Brasserie de Waterloo, located at Ferme de Mont-Saint-Jean on the edge of the battlefield, offers an enjoyable opportunity to round off your visit with a meal or one of the brewery's beers in the place that inspired them.

If you're planning a visit, check whether it coincides with one of Waterloo's annual historical re-enactment weekends. Every few years these become truly spectacular international events, with thousands of uniformed participants recreating scenes from the 1815 campaign.

Dog-friendly

Much of the battlefield and surrounding countryside can be explored with a well-behaved dog, although individual attractions, museums and indoor areas may have their own access policies.
