Villers-la-Ville
About this Place
Villers-la-Ville is a town in Wallonia, best known for the ruins of the former Cistercian Abbey of Villers. Founded in the twelfth century, the abbey grew into one of the most important monastic communities in the Low Countries. Today its historic buildings, gardens and modern abbey brewery together reflect nearly nine centuries of history, making it one of Belgium's best-kept heritage sites.
Visitor notes
The Abbey of Villers is one of the finest historic sites in Belgium and deserves more than a quick stop for a beer. Explore the extensive ruins and landscaped grounds, and make sure to wander into some of the areas that might, at first glance, appear less well preserved. They are often the most rewarding parts of the visit.
Then call in at the modern brewery and bistro.
The site regularly hosts exhibitions, concerts and cultural events, so it is worth checking the programme before your visit. These include introductions to brewing, wine-making and other traditional crafts.
The abbey is around thirty kilometres south of Brussels and makes an excellent day trip.
Dog-friendly
Dogs are welcome throughout the abbey grounds provided they are kept on a lead, making Villers-la-Ville one of the more dog-friendly historic sites in Belgium. Check the current policy before taking your dog into the excellent and highly recommended Bistro. On pleasant days, sitting outside with your pooch is usually a good option, but there may be restrictions indoors. The surrounding countryside also offers several well-signposted walking routes.
