About this Brewery
Abbaye de Villers is not a conventional brewery, but the modern continuation of a remarkable Cistercian brewing tradition. Founded in 1146 by monks from Clairvaux, the abbey became one of the most important in the Low Countries. Its guesthouse was converted into a brewery in the sixteenth century; surviving accounts from the 1720s and 1760s record three beers, brewed at different strengths for the monks, guests and workers. The abbey was suppressed during the French Revolution and later became the celebrated ruins seen today. Since 2016, a small brewery on the site has brewed the organic V, IX and III beers, while the Confrérie des Hostieux Moines produces further abbey beers.
