About this Place

Tongeren, in the Belgian province of Limburg, is widely regarded as Belgium’s oldest city. Its history reaches back to the Roman settlement of Atuatuca Tungrorum, and traces of that past remain visible throughout the city.

Today Tongeren combines its Roman and medieval heritage with the quieter character of a small Limburg city. The historic centre is dominated by the Gothic Basilica of Our Lady, while the surrounding region is known for fruit growing, rural landscapes and a developing modern beer scene.

Visitor notes

Tongeren is particularly associated with its Roman heritage and is home to the Gallo-Roman Museum, as well as surviving sections of Roman wall. Other landmarks include the Basilica of Our Lady and its Romanesque cloister, the medieval begijnhof and the Moerenpoort city gate.

In 2025 Tongeren merged administratively with neighbouring Borgloon to form the municipality of Tongeren-Borgloon, although Tongeren retains its identity as the historic city centre.
