Thuin

Wallonia

About this Place

Thuin is a small historic town in the province of Hainaut, Wallonia, overlooking the River Sambre. Its upper town, with narrow streets and distinctive hanging gardens, has retained much of its historic character and forms part of a landscape shaped by centuries of trade and industry.

For the Museum, Thuin is closely associated with Brasserie de l'Abbaye d'Aulne. The nearby ruins of Aulne Abbey and the modern brewery together create one of the more atmospheric brewing destinations in southern Belgium.

Visitor notes

Most visitors come to Thuin for the nearby ruins of Aulne Abbey, and with good reason. The remains of the former Cistercian monastery are among the most atmospheric historic sites in Belgium, while Brasserie de l'Abbaye d'Aulne keeps the abbey's brewing tradition alive beside them.

Allow a little time for Thuin itself, though. Its hillside setting and historic centre reward an unhurried walk before or after your visit to the abbey.

Dog-friendly

Thuin's historic streets, riverside paths and the grounds surrounding Aulne Abbey make it a pleasant destination to explore with a well-behaved dog.
