Brasserie Val de Sambre – Abbaye d’Aulne
About this Brewery
Aulne Abbey stands beside the River Sambre near Gozée, in the municipality of Thuin. Traditionally founded in the seventh century by Saint Landelin, it became a Cistercian abbey in 1147 and developed into an important religious community. The abbey was largely destroyed during the French Revolutionary period in 1794, leaving the magnificent ruins seen today.
Commercial brewing returned to the site in 1998, with beer initially produced in restored former stables among the abbey buildings. In 2019, production moved to the newly established Brasserie Val de Sambre at nearby Thuin-Lobbes. The brewery continues to make the recognised Abbaye d’Aulne range, commonly abbreviated to ADA, including Blonde, Brune, Ambrée and Premier Cru, alongside seasonal and speciality beers.
Although no longer brewed by monks, the beers retain a genuine connection with the historic abbey whose name they carry.
