Rochefort

Wallonia

About this Place

Rochefort is a small town in Wallonia, surrounded by the wooded landscapes of the Famenne and Ardennes. It is best known internationally for the famous Trappist beers brewed at the nearby Abbey of Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy, but visitors will also find historic streets, attractive countryside and easy access to some of Belgium's best-known natural attractions.

Visitor notes

Most visitors come to Rochefort because of its Trappist beer, but the abbey itself is closed to the public and brewery tours are not available. The town makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding countryside, including the famous Caves of Han and the Château Comtal de Rochefort. If Trappist beer is your destination, enjoy a glass locally while respecting that the abbey remains a working religious community rather than a tourist attraction.

Dog-friendly

Dogs are welcome in the town and many of the surrounding walking routes, provided they are kept under control. The nearby countryside offers plenty of opportunities for longer walks, although the Trappist abbey itself is not open to visitors.
