About this Brewery
Brasserie des Trappistes Rochefort operates within the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy, near Rochefort in the province of Namur. The monastery was founded in 1230, while the earliest written evidence of brewing there dates from 1595. Following the upheavals of the French Revolutionary period, monastic life was restored by Trappist monks from Achel in 1887 and brewing subsequently resumed.
Commercial beer sales began in 1910, but the brewery was substantially modernised during the 1950s with assistance from Chimay and brewing scientist Jean De Clerck. Its celebrated dark beers are Rochefort 6, Rochefort 8 and Rochefort 10; the numbers derive from an old Belgian measure of the original strength of the wort, rather than their alcohol content. Rochefort Triple Extra, a strong blonde beer, joined the range in 2020.
The beers carry the Authentic Trappist Product mark and are brewed within the abbey under monastic supervision. The abbey and brewery are not normally open to visitors.
