Dikkele
About this Place
Dikkele is a small village in the municipality of Zwalm, East Flanders, set among the rolling countryside of the Flemish Ardennes. Its compact historic centre, characterised by narrow cobbled streets and nineteenth-century buildings, has been protected since 1980.
Despite its size, Dikkele has a notable brewing history and was traditionally known locally as a “brewers' village”. Its best surviving reminder is the former Brouwerij De Wever in Brouwerijstraat. The brewery produced bottom-fermented beers until 1983, and its former brewery buildings and brewer's house still form a prominent part of the village.
Dikkele today is principally a destination for walking and cycling, with its preserved village centre, surrounding countryside and surviving cafés retaining much of its rural character.
