About this Brewery

Place: Dikkele

Brouwerij De Wever was a family brewery in Dikkele, East Flanders. In 1892–93, Theophiel Prosper De Wever acquired the village brewery previously operated as Brouwerij Excelsior by the Vander Stricht family. The Vander Strichts had moved their brewing interests to Ghent, where the Excelsior name would later reappear on the brewery best known for Star Pils.

De Wever specialised in bottom-fermented beers. Its range included Hercule Pils, Export and table beers; other local historical material also records beers including Duc.

Brewing ended in 1983 when the business was acquired by Kronenbourg, although members of the De Wever family continued for several years as beer merchants. The former brewery and brewer's house survive in Brouwerijstraat and are now recognised as architectural heritage.
