Bocholt
About this Place
Bocholt is a municipality in Belgian Limburg with a particularly strong brewing identity. Brouwerij Martens was founded here in 1758 and remains a family business after nine generations. It has since grown into one of Belgium’s largest breweries.
The original brewing site, a former inn called De Star, now houses the Bocholter Brouwerijmuseum. Its extensive collection covers historic brewing, malting, fermentation, bottling and beer transport, while the modern Martens brewery remains a prominent presence directly opposite.
Brouwerij Martens also brews Tout Bien Pils under licence, a brew described by the marketing department as the 'most average beer in the world'.
Visitor notes
The Bocholter Brouwerijmuseum can be visited on a guided tour. Group visits are generally available by prior reservation, with a more limited programme for individual visitors during the summer. Check the current opening and booking arrangements before travelling.
