Curator’s Notes

At first glance, this 2024 Tout Bien Pils glass is a conventional straight-sided pils glass, finished with a gold rim. Look more closely and the brewery’s characteristically playful approach begins to emerge.

The bold red Tout Bien lettering is accompanied by the brewery’s cartoon heart motif, which appears again as an etched mark in the base. The most discreet joke is reserved for the drinker: printed upside down on the rear are the words, “IF YOU CAN READ THIS YOUR GLASS NEEDS A REFILL”, becoming legible as the beer disappears.

Even the capacity refuses to behave normally. The glass is marked at precisely 34.5 cl — an oddly specific measure for a brewery whose Pils is otherwise encountered in rather more conventional serving sizes. Whether there is some practical explanation for those additional 1.5 centilitres, or Tout Bien simply decided that 33 cl was altogether too predictable, remains unclear.

Like the brewery’s tankard elsewhere in the collection, this is a familiar beer-glass form given a knowingly eccentric treatment. Tout Bien’s designs may go in and out of style, but they’re guaranteed to raise a smile.
