Curator’s Notes

This straight-sided Houppe tumbler with the proportions and feel of a pils glass, although it is not the glass used for the brewery’s Slip pils — that role belongs to BBG198.

Its most distinctive feature is the moulded pattern running around the inside of the glass. The repeated indentations give the otherwise simple tumbler a little texture and visual interest, recalling the treatment used on BBG120 in the Museum. They appear primarily decorative, though they may also influence the way bubbles form and rise through the beer.

The branding is restrained but more characterful than on the Slip glass. Houppe’s familiar figures sit above the words “Jambes en l’air”, with just a small touch of gold adding colour.

Despite the pils-like form, this appears to be a more general Houppe house glass rather than one tied to a single beer. We used it for the brewery’s alcohol-free blond, for which its simple, versatile shape worked perfectly well.

The “Jambes en l’air” name and stilt-walker imagery draw on Namur’s traditional stilt-jousting culture, a motif used widely across Houppe’s branding.
