Capacity 20cl Curator’s Notes A particularly pleasing small version of Tripel Karmeliet’s distinctive tulip glass. Its rounded bowl narrows towards the neck before flaring gently at the rim, while the relatively long stem gives even this 20cl version an elegant, well-balanced profile.
The decoration is restrained but unusually detailed. Tripel Karmeliet and the 1679 crest appear prominently on the front, while a delicate white design runs around the lower bowl. The date refers to a historic recipe associated with the Carmelite abbey in Dendermonde, discovered by Antoine Bosteels while developing the modern beer.
Tripel Karmeliet is brewed from three grains — barley, wheat and oats — and the brewery describes the distinctive glass as designed to concentrate its aromas while maintaining the beer’s head. tripelkarmeliet.com
This 20cl example was deliberately chosen in preference to the larger version: the smaller proportions simply seemed particularly pleasing.
