Curator’s Notes

This 20 cl Eupener Bier glass is an unusually small example of a pils glass, with a gently flared, Weizen-like profile, substantial base and traditional gold rim. Manufactured in 2024, it carries the Eupener name alongside the coat of arms of Eupen and the date 1834.

That date refers to the founding of the former Eupener brewery, which produced beer in the city until 1998. Eupener Bier is now brewed by Haacht in Boortmeerbeek, but remains strongly associated with its original home and is principally sold in the Eupen region.

The glass reinforces that regional identity. Beneath the city arms are the German words “Rein Malz und Edelhopfen” — pure malt and noble hops. It is a strikingly local presentation for a beer now produced elsewhere in Belgium.

This example came from Eupen itself. I drank Eupener there after arriving in the city on a wet day's walking along the Venntrilogie in May 2026.
