Manufactured 2025 Curator’s Notes This 33 cl Wipers Times glass is an elegantly restrained stemmed glass. Its relatively generous bowl sits above a long, simple stem, while the broad foot approximately mirrors the circumference of the rim.
The outlined Wipers Times wordmark dominates the front of the otherwise clear bowl, with the Kazematten brewery mark placed much more discreetly on the reverse. There is little decoration beyond the two identities, giving the glass a particularly clean and understated appearance.
“Wipers” was British soldiers' slang for Ypres during the First World War. The Wipers Times was the satirical trench newspaper created in 1916 by Captain Fred Roberts and Lieutenant Jack Pearson of the 12th Battalion, The Sherwood Foresters. Remarkably, issues of the newspaper were produced in the Houten Paard casemates beneath the Ypres ramparts — the historic spaces in which Kazematten now brews its Wipers Times beers.
This glass was given to me by Kazematten's head brewer during a visit to the brewery in May 2026. It has since suffered a rather unfortunate washing-up accident. Given its place at the very beginning of the collection, however, BBG001 remains on display while a replacement is sought.
