About this Brewery
Brouwerij Huyghe is an independent family brewery at Melle, near Ghent. Brewing has taken place on the Appelhoek site since at least 1654, but the modern brewery began when Léon Huyghe joined the local business in 1904. It became Brasserie L. Huyghe in 1925 and is now run by the fourth generation of the family. A major rebuilding in 1985 shifted its focus from pilsner to strong, high-fermentation beers and export markets. Its best-known beer, Delirium Tremens, was first brewed on 26 December 1988. The distinctive white “ceramic” bottle, colourful label and pink elephant made Delirium an international symbol of Belgian beer. The brewery also produces Floris wheat beers, Averbode and a wide Delirium range.
