About this Brewery
Alken-Maes is one of Belgium’s principal brewing groups. It was formed in 1988 through the merger of the Maes brewery of Waarloos and the Cristal brewery of Alken, and has been part of the Heineken group since 2008. Its most important historic beer is Cristal, launched in 1928 and widely recognised as Belgium’s first pilsner. The Alken site also brews Maes Pils and, following the closure of the former Affligem brewery in Opwijk in 2022, Affligem for the Belgian market. The group’s portfolio includes Cristal, Maes, Grimbergen, Affligem, Hapkin, Mort Subite and Ciney, among others.
