About this Brewery
Affligem is a recognised Belgian abbey-beer brand rather than a separate independent brewery. The Benedictine Abbey of Affligem was founded in 1074 and brewed beer for centuries; in 1956, after the abbey brewery had ceased production, the monks entrusted the beer to the nearby De Smedt brewery in Opwijk. De Smedt later became part of Alken-Maes, itself part of the Heineken group, while the abbey remains closely involved in protecting the character and recipes of the beer. When the Opwijk brewery closed in 2022, production for the Belgian market moved to Alken. The Affligem range includes Blonde, Dubbel, Tripel and Noël.
