About this Place

Namur is the capital of Wallonia, sitting at the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers beneath its imposing Citadel. The fortified site has around 2,000 years of history and includes extensive underground passages, gardens and viewpoints across the city. One of its more unexpected landmarks is Jan Fabre’s giant golden turtle, Searching for Utopia.

For the Museum, Namur has a small but distinctive modern brewing scene. Brasserie du Clocher, in nearby Malonne, produces its Philomène beers inside a converted chapel, while Brasserie de la Houppe is now based at Wépion in the former strawberry auction hall.

In the city centre, and the only one of the three actually within Namur proper, Barbetta’s combines a pizzeria with a 25-hectolitre microbrewery, producing its own beers on site.

Visitors hoping to see all three should plan ahead: Barbetta’s is easily reached on foot in central Namur, but Brasserie du Clocher and Brasserie de la Houppe are both well outside the centre and in different directions. Without a car, each is better treated as a separate excursion rather than part of a single brewery walk.
