Curator’s Notes

A generous goblet-style glass for Spookvlieger, a Belgian Blond brewed by Brouwerij Anders! in Halen. The bowl carries a simple black illustration of an aircraft flying above the skyline of Sint-Truiden. The glass has no visible capacity mark, manufacturer’s mark or production date, leaving the illustrated story as its defining feature.

The story behind Spookvlieger reaches back to the Second World War and the former airfield at Brustem, just outside Sint-Truiden. Today part of the Sint-Truiden municipality, Brustem was home to a major military airfield used by the German Luftwaffe during the war. Local legend tells of the mysterious “Spookvlieger van Brustem” — the ghost flyer — an unidentified Allied aircraft that appeared over the airfield, creating fear and curiosity among those who witnessed its unexplained appearances. The identity of the pilot, or even whether there was a single aircraft behind the stories, remains part of the mystery.

The beer and glass bring together modern brewing and local memory: a Belgian Blond that uses a wartime legend, aviation heritage and Sint-Truiden’s own history as inspiration. Rather than simply representing a brewery, the glass acts as a small piece of local storytelling.

I acquired this glass from the Sint-Truiden tourist information office in August 2026 during a visit to the town.

Note: Brouwerij Anders! is located in Halen, but the story behind this glass belongs to Sint-Truiden. Both places have their own exhibits in the Museum, and we recommend exploring both to discover more.
