Curator’s Notes

Returning from the Sunday Market at Gare du Midi, I spotted this glass in the window of Oxfam and spent the last €1 in my pocket on it. It was made for the Abbaye de Cambron beers at Pairi Daiza.

The substantial goblet has a broad, rounded bowl carrying paired Ange and Démon motifs, each incorporating an image of the abbey. The design refers to a Cambron legend. The monks supposedly drank to the bottom of their glasses to admire an angel worked into the base. When their abbot replaced the angel with a devil in an attempt to encourage moderation, they instead emptied their glasses so that no beer would be left for the devil.

There are no other markings on the glass: no brewery name, beer style or capacity. Without knowing the story behind it, there is remarkably little to reveal where this rather enigmatic glass came from.
