Explainers Curator’s Notes A distinctive Hoegaarden goblet for De Verboden Vrucht — The Forbidden Fruit — a strong dark Belgian ale. The colourful medallion depicts Adam and Eve, adapting the familiar biblical story rather appropriately by putting beer into their hands.
The glass itself initially looks like a fairly conventional rounded goblet, but there is a flourish beneath the bowl: the short stem twists dramatically upwards into the glass before spreading into its base. Given the Adam and Eve imagery above, it is difficult not to see something distinctly serpentine in that twisting glass — whether intended by the designer or simply a fortunate coincidence. The otherwise restrained design leaves the colourful Adam and Eve medallion to do most of the work, and this example remains remarkably sharp and well preserved.
There are no visible capacity or manufacturing markings. I paid €2 for it at a flea market.
