Manufactured 2024 Curator’s Notes This elegant St. Idesbald goblet carries restrained black and red branding, with the silhouette of a monk-like figure framed above the bilingual words “Abdij – Abbaye”. The figure represents St Idesbald, third abbot of the medieval Ten Duinen Abbey at Koksijde, who died in 1167.
The connection is more substantial than the monastic imagery familiar from many Belgian beer brands. St. Idesbald is the official abbey beer associated with Ten Duinen. Brouwerij Huyghe acquired the beers in 1994, and their later branding deliberately strengthened the connection with the abbey and its museum.
Since 2020 the relationship has acquired another dimension: a small house brewery has operated at Ten Bogaerde, part of the historic abbey estate, in collaboration with Huyghe. The regular St. Idesbald beers continue to be brewed at Huyghe's brewery in Melle.
The glass itself is a generously proportioned goblet with a tall, slender stem and a bowl which narrows slightly towards the rim. Its relatively restrained decoration allows the unusual silhouette of St Idesbald to provide its principal identity.
