About this Brewery

The Benedictine Abbaye de Maredsous was founded in 1872 in the wooded Molignée valley near Denée. Its striking neo-Gothic buildings, active monastic community and tradition of hospitality have made it one of Belgium’s best-known abbeys and a popular place to visit.

The first modern Maredsous beer was created in 1947. Seeking to improve its quality and consistency, the abbey entrusted production to Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat in 1963, acting on advice from the Catholic University of Leuven. Duvel Moortgat continues to brew, bottle and market the beers under licence and under the monks’ supervision. The principal range comprises Maredsous Blonde 6, Brune 8 and Tripel 10, the numbers reflecting their alcoholic strength. These are recognised abbey beers rather than Trappist beers. A small visitor microbrewery can also be seen at the abbey.
