About this Brewery

Place: Habay

Brasserie de Rulles is an independent brewery in the village of Rulles, part of the municipality of Habay.

Founded in 2000 by Grégory Verhelst, it produces a range of beers closely associated with the Gaume region.

The brewery has made open fermentation an important part of its brewing identity. With the exception of its pils, its beers are top-fermented in open tanks before undergoing a second fermentation in bottle or keg. The brewery even makes the open fermenters a feature of its visitor tours.

La Rulles also attracted attention unusually early in its life from influential beer writer Michael Jackson. The brewery records that Jackson praised Verhelst and his beers during its early years, helping give the young brewery an international profile.

Its visual identity includes Marcel le Rullot, a laid-back fisherman created by illustrator Palix, who appears across the brewery’s branding. The character reflects a deliberately genial picture of Gaume life: fishing, sunshine and, naturally enough, a bottle or two of La Rulles close at hand.
