Brasserie Impérial (Anderlecht)
About this Brewery
Brasseries Impérial was a historic Brussels brewery based in Anderlecht. Its origins lie in two neighbouring breweries established on Rue de la Clinique around 1880: Brasserie de l'Alliance and Brasserie Brabançonne. They were brought together around 1923 under the Brasseries Impérial name.
Impérial became a substantial local brewery producing beers including Horse Ale Impérial, Exki Pils Impérial, Export Impérial, Bock Impérial and Impérial Stout. The business expanded around its Anderlecht site, adding new offices and garages in the 1920s and a purpose-built bottling plant on nearby Rue Bissé in 1936.
Like many independent Belgian breweries of the period, Impérial was eventually caught up in the consolidation of the brewing industry. During the early 1960s it became associated with Caulier, Labor and several other breweries in the enterprise that became Brasserie de Ghlin. The Anderlecht brewery moved in 1964 and most of its former buildings were subsequently demolished.
One fragment survives. The former 1936 bottling building on Rue Bissé remains standing and has since been converted into housing.
