About this Brewery

Place: Brugge (Bruges)

Brouwerij Fort Lapin is a small artisanal brewery just north of Brugge’s historic centre. It was founded in late 2011 by brewer Kristof Vandenbussche, who converted premises previously used for refrigeration and electrical work into a brewery after years of home experimentation. The brewery emphasises small-scale production, its own recipes and Belgian-grown hops.

The name comes from the surrounding Fort Lapin area, itself named after a seventeenth-century fort built to protect Brugge’s commercial harbour. Today the brewery produces a varied range that includes Fort Lapin 8 Tripel, Fort Lapin 10 Quadrupel, amber and herbal beers, and more experimental releases.

The brewery remains very much a working local operation rather than a purely visitor-focused attraction, although tours and tastings are available by arrangement. Its presence adds a younger, independent strand to Brugge’s much older brewing history.

The brewery takes its name from the Fort Lapin area of Brugge; with lapin meaning “rabbit” in French, the brewery has turned the place name into a playful visual identity built around rabbit ears.
