About this Brewery
Brouwerij Mort Subite is a historic lambic brewery in Kobbegem, on the edge of the Pajottenland. The site traces its brewing heritage to 1686, while the De Keersmaeker family became associated with the business during the nineteenth century. It continues to produce spontaneously fermented lambic, matured and blended into gueuze and fruit beers including kriek.
The wonderfully dramatic name originated in a Brussels café run by Théophile Vossen. Customers played a dice game in which a hurried final round was called “mort subite”—sudden death. Vossen adopted the expression for his café and gueuze; the beer name later passed to the De Keersmaeker brewery. The celebrated café À la Mort Subite remains in Brussels, but is separate from the brewery.
Brouwerij Mort Subite became part of Alken-Maes in 1989 and is now ultimately owned by Heineken, although brewing continues at Kobbegem.
