Grimbergen

About this Brewery

Grimbergen is an abbey-beer brand associated with the Norbertine Abbey of Grimbergen, founded in 1128 near Brussels. The abbey brewed beer for centuries, but its brewery was destroyed during the French Revolution and the brewing equipment was sold in 1798. The phoenix on the label recalls the abbey’s repeated destruction and rebuilding, and its motto: “Ardet nec consumitur” — burned, but not destroyed.

Modern commercial Grimbergen beer began in 1958, when the abbey worked with the Maes brewery, now Alken-Maes. Alken-Maes, part of Heineken, continues to brew and distribute Grimbergen for the Belgian market; Carlsberg holds the international licence. A small Grimbergen Abbey Brewery began brewing at the abbey in 2021, reviving production on the historic site.
