Brouwerij Meiresonne

About this Brewery

Brouwerij Meiresonne was one of Ghent’s largest twentieth-century breweries. The family’s brewing story began in Bellem in 1866 and continued at its De Hoprank brewery in Landegem, before the First World War destroyed that site. Aimé Meiresonne rebuilt the business in Ghent, taking over premises on the Koepoortkaai; by 1935 it traded under the family name. After the Second World War it became the largest brewery in Flanders, employing several hundred people and operating a fleet of delivery lorries. Its best-known beer was **Celta Pils**, alongside Goliath, Ganda-Ale, Stolz and Fort-Op, as well as soft drinks and mineral water. Artois acquired a majority stake in 1964. Brewing later ceased and the site was redeveloped, leaving Celta glassware as a reminder of a major Ghent brewery.
